MDD export is not working in MAX, XSI, or LW

Mac,
I have been struggling with the mdd export not working properly in any of my apps.  It was just fine a few months ago, has there been any updates to it that may have thrown it off?

I've attatched the TAFA file, mdd and obj's that I am using.  If I import the obj into LW and apply a md-pug to it and point to the mdd file nothing happens.  This occurs acroass all apps.  The model is a cube with 5 divisions in the xyz and the top faces as well as one on the side are scalled out in the sh.obj file.  The Tafa is a simple blend between the base and sh morphs.

Try it on you system there with cube that has more than 1 segment on each side.  This also occurs on all of my earlier models.  Is there a way to role back to later verisions of TAFA?  I am on 1.2.2.7.

Crud  undecided

Some of the last work involved MDDs and frame sync issues, but I thought it fixed issues, not created them...

Oh well, I needed to crack open the code and remove the Maya export from the menu (since it doesn't work anyway -- Maya ANIM files are skeleton/framework animation files).  I'll fire up and look at the changes over the last couple of versions and see which ones affect MDDs.  As I roll back, I'll send you specially named versions to try out so you can tell me which version fixes the problem.

Also sorry to have taken so long to see this -- I thought I had monitoring turned on on all the boards so that I'd get notification of new posts...

Thanks for catching this,
Mac

It looks like the last significant change to MDD file creation was between 1.2.2.2 and 1.2.2.3.  That change occurred in January of 2006.  Version 1.2.2.7 is actually from March 2006, so if it was working a few months ago, the problem isn't due to a new release.

Hmmm...  I'm not sure what could have happened in the last few months.  I wondered if something in the EXE might have gotten corrupted, but that would almost certainly lead to a fatal crash, not a malformed output file.  I run AVG antivirus on the update server all the time, and that machine is highly locked down against outside controls, so it should be clean.

I'm out of ideas...  I'm going to continue looking at the 1.2.2.2 to 1.2.2.3 transition to remind myself what all changed and why.  I'll also try out the files you sent me and see if I can discover anything.  Let me know if you get any new information on your end.

Thanks,
Mac

Hmmm again...

I loaded up Clyde in TAFA, and nothing appears on screen.  This remains true for any visibility setting other than wireframe (textured, colored, or white).  In wireframe, though, I do get shaded wireframe of the box and its morph.  Very strange...  I looked at Clyde's MTL file, and the Tr (transparency) value is 0.0.  From this page:

http://www.csit.fsu.edu/~burkardt/data/mtl/mtl.html

that means that the box is completely transparent (I loathe the terminology they used, because Alpha is backwards from Transparency: Full Alpha is Not-At-All Transparent, and Zero Alpha is Fully Transparent).

Well, at least I know why the box didn't show up, but I'm not sure why the MTL file was listing the box as transparent (unless this is a control cage that is meant to be transparent in rendering)

Back to looking at MDD code...

I'm sorry.  The important piece of information got lost in my rambling there...

The MDD file creation hasn't changed since the 1.2.2.2 -> 1.2.2.3 transition, back in January.  Even more significantly, the 1.2.2.7 release was back in March.  Since it was working a few months prior to December, and no new releases have come out since March, I don't think it can be on the TAFA side.

It also seems unlikely that you've patched all of MAX, XSI, and LW in the intervening period...  If you have, it is possible that there was a common misunderstanding about MDD that they all fixed (the probabilities just keep dwindling).

Nothing has changed in TAFA in the relevant timeframe, but I can't explain why things would have stopped working.  Is it possible that the last time it worked was actually back around this time last year (Februaryish)2?  If so, then it could have been a change somewhere in the 1.2.2.3 -> 1.2.2.7 range -- I still don't know what it could be, having looked at the code, but at least there were changes then...
