3D Studio Max pipeline?

Hello,

I there anyone out here that is using TAFA with Max and DAZ Millennium models? I am looking for a good solution to get Poser/DAZ models (Horse, cat, dog) into Max for facial animation and secondary animation and rendering. There appears to be a serious lack of tools to use Poser models in the Max world. Body Studio expects you to do all the animation in Poser. . .

I am seriously looking at ramping up with Lightwave ( have not used it since v.3) and then going with the Greenbriar tools to import and rig Poser/DAZ models and then TAFA or Mimic to do the facial animation.

Any thoughts or suggestions are really appreciated. I need to get a pipeline up in less than a month. The project wants to start shooting in March. . .

Thanks!
-David

I can only speak for the facial animation side of things, but within that limit:

TAFA can load Poser models, although it currently only loads the uncompressed versions.  This may be an issue with DAZ Millennium models, or it may be fine.  The trial version can load anything that the full version can, so you could try out the trial version on the models you need to see how it will work.

The other people I know who use 3DS Max with TAFA export MDD (Motion Designer Data) files, and then use Point Oven Pro to import those into 3DS Max.  If I can find good documentation on Max's new XAF animation file format, I should be able to directly generate those, which would remove the Point Oven Pro requirement.

I'm not sure about loading the models into Max.  Certainly, underneath the Poser file is just an OBJ, which you could load, but that will lose all of the advanced surface properties (and probably a lot of the basic ones).  We do have a few Max users and Poser users, who may be able to suggest paths.

Thanks for the comments Mac. I will dl the demo this week and see what I can figure out. I would like to stay in Max if I can for this project, but I could move to Lightwave which I used back in my Amiga days. Your program looks fantastic and I'll stop back after having looked at the demo.

Hey Mac,

Really great work on TAFA. I got a chance to check it out this week. I'm still not sure about the Max angle, seems like I should go the LW route.

I saw one of the topics here where you where talking about not wanting to make plugins to 3D apps, but rather would like to use a file format. Have you given any thoughts to using .FBX from Alias. Max, Maya, Lightwave and others can read this format. I'm not a programer so this is just an un-educated comment. . .

(Sorry for the horrible response time...  Insane things going on at work...)

I pulled down the FBX stuff a while back and looked at it some.  There are some problems with how the plugins work.  I know that in LW, you can save something out in FBX, then load that same file back in and the object will be rotated around two axes.  The owners of FBX don't seem to be real hot on supporting it.

Certainly if I can get it to work, that would solve a lot of problems...  Maybe now that 3DS owns Alias, something will happen...
