Imagine taking a single 2D picture and being able to walk into it -- look left, right, up, down, walk behind people and objects, pan around, etc.

This tool will actually let you do it.  Watch the little videos on that page to see what it can do.  If you've got a big network connection, go to the Thesis videos for higher resolution versions.

Seems like this would be a great tool for certain kinds of animatics.  Especially if you create you background first, and then layer in your objects and characters.  The program needs a picture of the background, which you would normally make by "ammending" the full image.  But if you have the background originally, you could store it off as an image before you started drawing in the other objects.

This won't animate characters or their movement, but if you just wanted to knock out a sketch of an environment, room, crowd, whatever and then see how it looks to move the camera around in it, it seems like this could be a really fast way to get from point A to point B.

It's also just cool for setting up a scene inside a really nice painting or photograph.  I think of things like the the pan through the woods in Fantasia, which this could set up for you.  Or if you needed to do a zoom in from a wide shot down into a room or something.

(Looking forward to being able to have high-speed internet again... ;P )

The description sounds like the "Blade Runner" thing with its picture... "Pan left... stop... pull back... stop."
